I now have a 2:1 in "Fashion Design with Manufacturing" and I couldn't be happier. I am now hoping to do a photo shoot of my finished collection for you all to see and comment on of course, as feed back would be brilliant.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
I am so happy I managed to create a collection using low water consumption with sustainability being the core focus. Using vintage cavalry twill that was once produced in Huddersfield in mills that are now the University. As well as hemp that was dyed locally and recycled denim jeans yarn.<br />
<br />
The Autumn/Winter collection consisted of heavy coats lined with organic cotton, traditional cotton ticking trousers and a sustainable jumper of a uniquely knitted fisherman's pattern from a few hundred years ago. The jumper was knitted courtesy of a lovely lady in Leeds who is currently knitting a large to see how it will translate in sizes. Which I am then hoping to produce more of.<br />
<br />
I am also hoping to produce a few more one off coats and shirts based on the collection I made and start designing a few more pieces based on a few new ideas and inspiration.<br />
<br />
Now to save for Ethical Fashion Week in Berlin next year :)<br />
As well as locating hemp textiles shows in Europe. </div>

Especially when the yarn still has to be imported. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Competing with large companies for fabric orders and having to follow up sample orders with a £1000 order is something I can't do. Which lead me to source alternative options of dying other fabrics and finishing myself. Highlighting again, how hard it is to manufacture and produce small quantities in this country, even more so when you're a small unknown company. Slowly I'm getting there, even though I can't quite see light yet but it's there.....somewhere :)</div><div><br />
</div><div>I'll start to pop up pictures once they look more garment like. </div><div><br />

Mike Flanagan from Clothesource “Is there no alternative to sourcing from China?" and Mark Sumner, Sustainable Raw Materials Specialist for Marks & Spencer plc.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Mark Sumner gave a really informative talk on a “A Sustainable Textile Supply Chain?" which highlighted further issues regarding fresh water supplies and "water being the oil of the 21st century". As well as reinforcing land use issues. Something that has got me thinking even more really, especially with regards to Palm Oil.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Overall it was a really good event and very glad I attended :). I need to do a more in depth write up though on the overall day as I took in so much. </span></div>Sustainable Tailoring™http://www.blogger.com/profile/01957182663180149413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8649002861788197066.post-42808042951636542912011-09-09T15:18:00.000+01:002011-09-09T15:18:37.974+01:00Paris Ethical Fashion Show<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Late Monday night or should I say early Tuesday morning, I returned from what can only be described as an "amazing" time in Paris. This was because of the Paris Ethical Fashion Show I attended from the 1st to the 4th September. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGSifgq9UyUHM9OQjXXb7zB8HmWw5sfV3WsjXCDSdCMC4YDXjA95J6V_TEUxp9zlrxcYUk_tZIMK2Ceigx-LoPtxmXEED6OHQ9EfYOEwJe1RQA0YTrsEebWnPqI8jhQF3rlTUGwW-m4Ho3/s1600/efs_20112.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" nba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGSifgq9UyUHM9OQjXXb7zB8HmWw5sfV3WsjXCDSdCMC4YDXjA95J6V_TEUxp9zlrxcYUk_tZIMK2Ceigx-LoPtxmXEED6OHQ9EfYOEwJe1RQA0YTrsEebWnPqI8jhQF3rlTUGwW-m4Ho3/s320/efs_20112.jpg" width="225" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">There was a variety of fashion designers involved including men's, women's, children's clothiers, accessories and shoes. As well as many conferences throughout the 3 day period held to focus on environmental labelling, "Ecodesign" in fashion, and other relevant topics.</span></div><div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The companies exhibiting had to allow for a judgment of ethical production practices such as the work conditions of their suppliers, respect of the environment and the promotion and protection of local skills. Working conditions must conform to ILO Conventions. The fashion must have the least possible impact on the environment through all cycles of the products: production, use and disposal.</span></div><div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I attended the majority of the conferences and found them extremely informative and helpful, with lots of exciting things to take in. There was a talk on "Luxury &/VS Solidarity" which is something I believe in very much, "Don't give me a fish, teach me to angle". And how luxury combined with talented skills and ethics can create great quality garments that can be appreciated by those who purchase them. </span></div><div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Other conferences included "Environmental Labelling" where many things like, standards, consequences of purchasing habits and the environmental cost of consumption was discussed. "Innovation & Ecodesign" where industrial ethics and lifecycles of products were covered, as well as environmental/social responsibilities.</span></div><div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">As for the garments, it was great being surrounded by products created in many innovative ways using a wide range of sustainable materials either recycled or new. So, overall a great experience that I will definitely want to go to again.</span></span></div>Sustainable Tailoring™http://www.blogger.com/profile/01957182663180149413noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8649002861788197066.post-64976523530303203642011-08-12T22:25:00.001+01:002011-08-12T22:25:45.142+01:00Ethical Fashion ShowOnly a few weeks now until I go to Paris for the Ethical Fashion Show and I can't wait. Accommodation booked and travel and show ticket sorted.
I'm a little nervous about wondering around Paris all alone but I've been before for Première Vision last year, so I'm sure I'll be fine.
I'm definitely going to do a little more sight seeing and visit a few more museums this time as well as a visit to Colette again.
<br /><p class='blogpress_location'>Location:<a href='http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Paris&z=10'>Paris</a></p>Sustainable Tailoring™http://www.blogger.com/profile/01957182663180149413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8649002861788197066.post-70959482820257320792011-07-31T14:32:00.000+01:002011-07-31T14:32:25.963+01:00London Textile FairI made the lovely megabus journey to London on Thursday to attend the London Textile Fair. Which I did find usefull and enjoyable, it just wasn't as usefull as I had hoped. I'm not saying I wouldn't attend again but I would much rather attend somewhere that had more independent textile manufactures on a smaller scale, preferably something where they don't have to pay through the nose just to show their sustainable fabric. As well as the sellers knowing what they were selling (traceability that's honest). Many questions I asked about traceability couldn't really be answered but I didn't speak to everyone, so I may have missed some.<br />
<br />
I suppose being younger than what seemed like everyone there didn't help either. They seemed to tell me what they thought I wanted to hear based on big names. Unless the big name your telling me care more about the environment and not about how much profit they make or whose wearing their material/product. Then I don't want to know, that may sound harsh but look what's happening with Nike, Adidas and other companies causing problems.<br />
<br />
One person also told me that "being eco", (their words) was a trend and would pass.<br />
Now, I understand the "sort of" point being made, however, I disagree. I'm not following a trend, I'm doing what I do because I'm against large scale consumerism and the disregard for our planet and it's other inhabitents. I believe in making things that last that can be passed on, updated and given new leases of life to new owners. Having that character, that story. For me it isn't a trend, it's a way of life. I want quality in what I make and buy and I want to put my money to good use and help people that help other causes, a wider sense of community. Planning for the future would be a good way to look at it, people do it with their own families, making sure they have money in the future. I would like to add though what good is money if there is no environment to enjoy it in, money is also partly cotton, so we wouldn't be able to make it either.......no fertile land. (In the most basic sense of course). We'd find something else anyway. <br />
<br />
Now, after that little outburst there was a company that I really wanted to meet because of their sustainable labels and the stuff they showed me was lovely :) I definitely want to keep in contact with them and was the main reason for me going to the event, so i'll keep focusing on that positive. Im am however looking for a British woven label company that manufacture sustainable labels in Britain from either British natural or recycled fibres. As this is proving quite hard, maybe that company doesn't exsist. If so I will have to start looking more in main land Europe for a similar company. Or make my own of them too. <br />
<span class="st"><em></em></span> <br />
Overall, a learning experience and thats what I have taken away :)Sustainable Tailoring™http://www.blogger.com/profile/01957182663180149413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8649002861788197066.post-78507609510621183182011-05-10T09:40:00.000+01:002011-05-10T09:40:50.891+01:00Ethical Fashion Dilemma column<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Well, over the weekend I received the May/June issue of Ethical Consumer magazine, which contained a bit about Sustainable Tailoring in the Ethical Fashion Dilemma column. I was contacted and asked about what I do and offer as a service in response to questions brought up by readers of the magazine. Readers had contacted the magazine regarding information on ethical men’s suits that were in the North as well as London, with Ethical Consumer then contacting Savile Row and other similar ventures for their ethical options and values. The column contains a question and answer layout where questions were answered by the companies contacted. <br />
<br />
I love buying this magazine so I felt very privileged when I was asked, as it always has useful information on what’s going on with regards to ethics and values and how we can incorporate them into the way we consume in our everyday life. This is something very passionate to me. It is also the first time Sustainable Tailoring has been mentioned publically, which makes me feel very.........giddy (being one word to describe how I felt when I saw it) and excited overall. <br />
<br />
This month’s issue focuses on the illegal-logging trade and sustainably sourced wood within different furniture companies.<br />

<br />
Attending were various Press/Colleges and award winners/UK manufacturers and I have to say what a great experience it was too. The presentation started with a very inspirational talk, covering British Wool and its great qualities and how its usage has changed so much over the past few decades. Following onto how we need to engage younger people to use and embrace British Wool to the best of its ability. Lot's of valid points being made that got me thinking that everything I've always thought of British Wool has been the positive road to take and that made me feel a lot happier. <br />
The work produced by the students/UK manufactures was amazing to see and I especially enjoyed talking to them to see how they'd produced the final samples. Later was a discussion about British Wool and I learnt some great things that I will definitely benefit from in the future.<br />
Causing my passion for British Wool and natural, sustainable UK Textiles to grow and grow.<br />
